The Edible Bus Station
CRYSTAL PALACE BUS STATION, SE19 1UD
CLIENT: Local Residents
PROJECT STATUS: ONGOING
SECTOR: PUBLIC REALM
Working in collaboration with Crystal Palace Transition Town, we have supported the creation of London’s first Edible Bus Station. The garden, predominantly planted with herbs and edible flowers, is situated at the far end of Crystal Palace’s bus terminus on a formally nondescript piece of unused lawn. It is the terminating stop or the starting point, depending which way you are travelling on the Edible Bus RouteTM which utilises the 322 bus route.
With approval from Bromley Council and Transport for London, who manage the bus station, the first community ground-breaking day was held on October 20th 2013. The garden has flourished since and has received enthusiastic support from locals via the proactive Crystal Palace Transition Town. Bus drivers are particularly complimentary when there’s dig days and surplus herbs from the garden are harvested to sell at the local farmers market. It is part of Crystal Palace’s patchwork of farms and has become a place of pride within the community.
