The journey of 48 pots

When asked, ‘what does The Edible Bus Stop do?’, one of our answers is ‘we make a difference’. What’s more, we encourage others to do so. Whether commissioned or offering our services to help a local group to get growing, if we can find a way to green the grey, we will.

Earlier this year, the team at the City Bridges Trust’s ‘Growing Localities’ awards got in contact. We won the overall award in 2014, so were intrigued when they asked we animate the 2015 ceremony, as it’s not something we’d done before. Our challenge was to make the installation sustainable, the solution was to make it, as an installation, last longer than one night.

With this in mind, we contacted Elho – an innovative and ecologically focused plant pot manufacturer with an eye on sleek design. We pitched to them the awards ceremony and how their planted pots could then go on to adorn the our Chelsea Fringe party at our HQ, co-hosted with Incredible Edible Lambeth, and finally, to be housed in Clapham North tube stations ticket hall as part of Underground in Bloom. They generously provided us with the in-kind support of their plant pots, which we then filled with donated pro-grow compost from our long time supporters – Veolia UK.

The first round of planting took on a seasonal ‘woodland’ theme. So along with wild herbs and strawberries, ferns and gorgeous dusty pink Foxgloves also featured. After the long hot summer, we refreshed the planting for Clapham North tube, to extend its legacy. The staff have taken on the ticket hall garden as their own and report that passengers still comment on how lovely it feels to use the station.

Thank you to City Bridges Trust, Elho World, Incredible Edible Lambeth, Veolia and our lovely mate Marek, who along with team EBS donated time/skills/energy/goods.

Together, we made a difference.
